Often associated with subdivisions because of their use of retention ponds. Adults can often be found in large numbers after a heavy rain. It is opportunistic in finding a host and will feed on almost anything. 

Larval habitat: Breeds in freshly flooded ditches, retention ponds, detention ponds, and water that includes rich organic matter. Eggs of this species have been found in virtually all types of aquatic habitat.

Biting activity: dusk, dawn, and night

Flight range: less than a mile
