Jailer Kelly was beaten to death by a mentally ill inmate at the Galveston County Jail.
Jailer Kelly was attacked by the inmate, who stuck and kicked him. The inmate then pulled Jailer Kelly into a cell where he beat him mercilessly, stomping on his chest and stomach. The inmate had to be forcibly restrained in order for Jailer Kelly to be rescued and receive medical attention. Jailer Kelly died six days after the vicious attack.
Jailer Kelly had served with the Galveston County Sheriff's Department for five years and was survived by his wife and three children.

Deputy Meyer was shot and killed while working in the Galveston County Jail. A person entered the jail, asked to see an inmate, and then pulled out a handgun. A jail trustee began to struggle with the man and the weapon discharged, striking Deputy Meyer in the stomach. The suspect and the inmate he came to see both escaped.
Deputy Meyer had been with the agency for six years and was survived by his wife and seven children.

Deputy Goode was shot and killed during an escape at the Galveston County Jail. He was removing an inmate from his cell when the inmate produced a semi-automatic pistol which had been smuggled to him by a friend. The man ordered Deputy Goode to release two other inmates. After Deputy Goode complied, the inmate shot him in the chest as he pleaded for his life. As they attempted to flee they were confronted by the Chief Jailer, who was beaten severely by the men. All three suspects were eventually apprehended and two were sentenced to life and the third was sentenced to 50 years.
