History at Your Doorstep
An Educational Outreach Program from the
Galveston County
Historical Museum
Since area students cannot visit our museum at this time, we are bringing the museum to the classroom through our new program, History at your Doorstep. The lessons are designed to teach Galveston County students about their local history. Our programs are a useful supplement that can be included in many social studies units throughout the year. They are available in English and Spanish.
Each program includes:
- A visit from museum staff (about 1 hour)
- A powerpoint presentation filled with historic images
- Students will get an up-close look at artifacts from the museum’s collection
- Students participate in hands-on activities like viewing through stereographs, playing with buzz saw toys, carding cotton, writing on slates, using a pump drill, and other fun activities
- Pre-visit activities for the classroom to complete before our visit
- Post-activities for the students to reinforce the lesson after our visit
- Curriculum guide
Here are our current program titles:
- Galveston: Past, Present, Your Future
- History of Bolivar Peninsula
- History of La Marque
- History of Santa Fe: Alta Loma, Arcadia, and Algoa
- Native Americans of Galveston County
- The 1900 Storm
We are always working to develop new programs. So, please call us if you have a good idea for a new program, and continue to check our website for updates.
At this time our programs are free of charge. If you would like a curriculum guide, have any questions, or if you would like to schedule a program for your classroom, please call Jodi Wright-Gidley at 409-766-2340.
