THE LAWYERS
Lawyers represent people who have to come to court. Lawyers are also called attorneys.
Lawyers try to convince the judge and jury to make decisions that help the people they represent. Lawyers take turns asking the witnesses questions and showing evidence to the judge and jury.
There might be two lawyers in the courtroom or there might be several. They sit at tables in front of the judge.
Sometimes the lawyers will argue with each other. They might
talk very loud and act like
they are mad at each other. The lawyers act that way
for several reasons. Sometimes the lawyer is trying to make a witness stop
talking. The lawyer might try to scare the other lawyer or to get the attention
of the judge and jury. Or the lawyers might talk loud just to show off. The
lawyers are not usually mad.
Acting that way can be part of the lawyer’s job. If a lawyer yells while you are in court do not be scared. The lawyer will not be yelling at you. It does not mean you have done anything wrong.
Sometimes a lawyer will stand up and say "objection" or "I object". Lawyers have a lot of rules they are supposed to follow in court. When a lawyer objects he is telling the judge that another lawyer has broken one of the rules.
Remember that the judge and the bailiff will make the lawyers behave.
